The Challenge :
Throughout West Virginia, dangerous products were on the shelves of greedy gas stations and shady smoke shops. These products were laced with harmful drugs, marketed as children’s cereal bars and candies.
The Solution :
Iron Arch advocates led the charge by compiling research reports, gathering the licit product, and presenting it to lawmakers. Working with WV House and Senate Leadership, encountering numerous challenges, Iron Arch was successfully able to maneuver SB 546 through the West Virginia State Senate and House of Delegates with strong bipartisan support despite the heavy pressure applied by special interests.
The Result :
Governor Jim Justice signed SB 546 into law, listing these dangerous substances as Schedule I – Controlled Substances. This important legislation was the most significant consumer protection laws passed during the session, while also enabling law enforcement to remove these dangerous products from the shelves of retails and prosecute their manufacturers.
